Pinked Out

Fall came early this morning to the Treasure Coast—70 degrees! The woodpeckers are a bit livelier, their ruby heads hammering palms in search of insects. The Egyptian geese are squawking at park’s pond—they are new arrivals to the neighborhood.

The hummers haven’t yet arrived though. We’re watching. The neighbors typically gather under a pink-bloomed orchid tree watching the little birds flit about in pairs. Today, though fully leaved, the orchid tree has only one bloom. The first sign. Yet even the butterflies have shied away.

(C) Kelly Jadon, 2021 “Blue Hummer” SOLD

the high place

inside limbs

above boughs

shrouded by leaves

leaves her with a new view

viewing what is

hidden behind leaves hiding

camouflage

hummer’s hues

the high place

inside limbs

above boughs

shrouded by leaves

leaves her hidden

hiding herself

camouflaged

blond hair

green eyes

barefoot & sunkissed brown

the view from high up

up high where

michigan green-crabbed apples grew

into her hand

a few

flew

as if falling far

at passersby below

pedestrians on beaten dirt

made smooth

a summer’s pastime

time passing

day by sun-kissed day

so brief

the view

inside limbs

above boughs

shrouded by leaves

the high place

A New Life!

Today my daughter texted a photo to our family. There’s a new life preparing to be born! In that secret place, the baby is being knit together. It’s amazing what ultrasound technology reveals.

Life is precious. Life is brief. Like that of grass—it is green, ages and then is cut and returns to the earth. The life of a hummingbird is brief as well—between five and nine years, depending on the type. The majority don’t make it past one year.

Enjoy the flowers, the birds, the beauty of the earth while it is before you!

Life Lifts: An Ekphrastic Poem

(C) Kelly Jadon, 2021 From “Hummer in Flight”

(C) Kelly Jadon, 2021 From “Hummer in Flight”

Life Lifts

life lifts and flits wings on air

elsewhere

where royal rose’s hues rejoice

petal lips turned back

stigma brimming

wide, waiting, a wonder

life lifts and flits words

elsewhere

where royal golden crowns thrown down

before peace shod, two-holed feet

words pointed heavenward

on rosy lips

wide, waiting, in wonder

The Sylph: An Ekphrastic Poem

(C) Kelly Jadon, 2021, “Sylph” from “Hummer in Flight”

(C) Kelly Jadon, 2021, “Sylph” from “Hummer in Flight”

The Sylph

slender sylph picks and preens

himself

as if preparing for a selfie

his deep dark turquoise vert greens

languishing from crown

along the length of a heavy-forked tail

wings lifted, opening out

he lives

though not for himself

but for the one love

he calls to

for her

he sings

for her

he whizzes

his tail

as a comet

breaking loose night’s still sky

Where do stained glass windows originate?

(C) Kelly Jadon 2021, “Hummer Hanger” $125; No longer available

Stained glass originated in ancient Egypt, Rome and Syria. The Egyptians created glass beads around 2700 BC. Wealthier Romans inserted the first stained glass windows. And the Phoenicians manufactured glass in Sidon, Antioch, and Tyre. Today, the Syrians remain famous as glass blowers and beach makers.

For the last 1,000 years, stained glass windows have been seen as those installed in churches and cathedrals. These windows were not for worship purposes themselves, but told the pictorial story of Jesus to illiterate attenders.

My own first attraction began as a child attending services at the Goodrich United Methodist Church in Michigan. Sadly, the building no longer stands.

Churches have favored stained glass windows as a religious form because the light coming through the glass illuminating the Biblical story is symbolic of the light of Scripture. It is a physical symbol of a spiritual concept.

The windows are often ornate and vibrantly colored, demonstrating the variety and beauty of the Christian faith.

The Signal

(C) Kelly Jadon, 2021 from “Hummers Delight”

(C) Kelly Jadon, 2021 from “Hummers Delight”

September’s strange winds, dimming days, falling flowers

signal

migration

each solitary hummer born bird

wings over water

catching tail winds, skimming tree tops

a simple New World snowbird

dares mountain peaks turned southward

returning to winter’s roost

orchid and silk trees

emboldened by rosy blooms

transplants of Asia firmly rooted to sandy soil

twittering upon full-leafed boughs

until heat’s humidity hails

the signal

to lift limbs

solitarily

wing its way northward

skimming tree tops

catching tail winds

over waters

past mountain peaks

and begin again
