The Mosaic

Pinked Out

Fall came early this morning to the Treasure Coast—70 degrees! The woodpeckers are a bit livelier, their ruby heads hammering palms in search of insects. The Egyptian geese are squawking at park’s pond—they are new arrivals to the neighborhood.

The hummers haven’t yet arrived though. We’re watching. The neighbors typically gather under a pink-bloomed orchid tree watching the little birds flit about in pairs. Today, though fully leaved, the orchid tree has only one bloom. The first sign. Yet even the butterflies have shied away.

A New Life!

Today my daughter texted a photo to our family. There’s a new life preparing to be born! In that secret place, the baby is being knit together. It’s amazing what ultrasound technology reveals.

Life is precious. Life is brief. Like that of grass—it is green, ages and then is cut and returns to the earth. The life of a hummingbird is brief as well—between five and nine years, depending on the type. The majority don’t make it past one year.

Enjoy the flowers, the birds, the beauty of the earth while it is before you!

A Last Gift: An Ekphrastic Blog

September 24, 2021 Kelly Jadon
(C) Kelly Jadon, “Grandmother’s Hummingbird,” 2021 $50.00

(C) Kelly Jadon, “Grandmother’s Hummingbird,” 2021 $50.00

I knew my grandmothers. I also knew my great grandmothers—one lived in a house built into the front of a hill in Boyne City, Michigan. The floor, linoleum, was not level, but ran downward on a slant. Great grandma Jacobson, the descendant of Swedish immigrants, lived on a prime piece of real estate, overlooking Lake Charlevoix. The view was spectacular. Every time a child was born, my great grandfather, an original Swede from a sailing ship, would add on another room. I visited there one time, in the summer. Great grandma was a little old woman with a little old stove. I attended her funeral a few years later. Most of her sons were there too. They loved to crack jokes. Some included my great grandmother, in clear view in her open casket. Their humor centered around the idea of my great grandmother suddenly sitting up during the service. Her daughter, my great aunt, told her brothers to stop. She was more reserved than her siblings and thought the dead should be respected. They just laughed though and answered, “If Ma were here, she’d laugh too!”

Grandmothers are all sorts of people, by so many names, Nana, Nona, Gram, Grandma, Grammy, Mimi….Recently I found out that I’m to be a grandmother too. A grandma? Me? I don’t feel old enough for this regal title!

I’ll need to think about this. Will I be the joking grandma who would laugh during a funeral? Or will I be the type that promises homemade waffles and then sneaks sweet potatoes into the batter?

Another grandma-relative I know regularly handed out jelly beans to her many grandkids. When her turn arrived to go to Heaven, a bag of jelly beans was placed under her arm in the open casket. That’s how she was known and remembered by her grandkids—and one of those kids, helped himself before the coffin closed. A last gift. A good memory.

Life Lifts: An Ekphrastic Poem

(C) Kelly Jadon, 2021 From “Hummer in Flight”

Life Lifts

life lifts and flits wings on air

elsewhere

where royal rose’s hues rejoice

petal lips turned back

stigma brimming

wide, waiting, a wonder

life lifts and flits words

elsewhere

where royal golden crowns thrown down

before peace shod, two-holed feet

words pointed heavenward

on rosy lips

wide, waiting, in wonder

The Sylph: An Ekphrastic Poem

(C) Kelly Jadon, 2021, “Sylph” from “Hummer in Flight”

The Sylph

slender sylph picks and preens

himself

as if preparing for a selfie

his deep dark turquoise vert greens

languishing from crown

along the length of a heavy-forked tail

wings lifted, opening out

he lives

though not for himself

but for the one love

he calls to

for her

he sings

for her

he whizzes

his tail

as a comet

breaking loose night’s still sky

Where do stained glass windows originate?

September 13, 2021 Kelly Jadon
(C) Kelly Jadon 2021, “Hummer Hanger” $125; No longer available

(C) Kelly Jadon 2021, “Hummer Hanger” $125; No longer available

Stained glass originated in ancient Egypt, Rome and Syria. The Egyptians created glass beads around 2700 BC. Wealthier Romans inserted the first stained glass windows. And the Phoenicians manufactured glass in Sidon, Antioch, and Tyre. Today, the Syrians remain famous as glass blowers and beach makers.

For the last 1,000 years, stained glass windows have been seen as those installed in churches and cathedrals. These windows were not for worship purposes themselves, but told the pictorial story of Jesus to illiterate attenders.

My own first attraction began as a child attending services at the Goodrich United Methodist Church in Michigan. Sadly, the building no longer stands.

Churches have favored stained glass windows as a religious form because the light coming through the glass illuminating the Biblical story is symbolic of the light of Scripture. It is a physical symbol of a spiritual concept.

The windows are often ornate and vibrantly colored, demonstrating the variety and beauty of the Christian faith.

I'm Small, But I'm Fast!

(C) Kelly Jadon, From “Hummers Delight”

(C) Kelly Jadon, From “Hummers Delight”

My daughter is built just like her “Tayta,” or grandmother, in English. At 79, Tayta is still in vibrant health, living in Nazareth, Israel.

At the end of my daughter’s senior year, the Jensen Beach High School yearbook was published. It included a photo of my daughter sprinting around the last curve of the 400 meter race. Captioned underneath was her comment—”I’m short, but I’m fast!”

The hummingbird is the smallest of birds, but able to fly up to 60 miles per hour. 90% of his time is spent hovering while feeding, its wings beating so fast they “hum.” He can move himself up, down, backward, even upside-down!

Florida Blue Heron

September 10, 2021 Kelly Jadon

(C) Kelly Jadon, 2021—No longer available

When I first came to Florida I lived in Pasco County, on the Gulf of Mexico. Moving to Florida from Michigan is a bit like arriving as an immigrant in a foreign country. Many things are different.

About a mile or so out into the Gulf I observed houses, built up above the water on stilts. Pilings were sunk in place during the early 1900s. They were temporary houses of refuge from frequent rainstorms or a place to hold the catch. To a Northerner, they are similar to the ice fishing shanty out on the frozen lake.

Privately owned and grandfathered in as permissible buildings, they are handed down from one generation to the next. Unique treasures, permits are no longer allowed for more stilt homes.

The Florida Blue Heron too has long stilt-like legs lifting his body up high above the water, keeping him dry. His long neck reaches deeply to suddenly spear fish and baby gators with his spike-like beak. He often stands alone along the shallows in my backyard, just as the house on stilts upon the Gulf waters.

The Signal

(C) Kelly Jadon, 2021 from “Hummers Delight”

(C) Kelly Jadon, 2021 from “Hummers Delight”

September’s strange winds, dimming days, falling flowers

signal

migration

each solitary hummer born bird

wings over water

catching tail winds, skimming tree tops

a simple New World snowbird

dares mountain peaks turned southward

returning to winter’s roost

orchid and silk trees

emboldened by rosy blooms

transplants of Asia firmly rooted to sandy soil

twittering upon full-leafed boughs

until heat’s humidity hails

the signal

to lift limbs

solitarily

wing its way northward

skimming tree tops

catching tail winds

over waters

past mountain peaks

and begin again

Together: An Ekphrastic Poem for "Hummers Delight"

(C) Kelly Jadon, Front View, “Hummers Delight”

TOGETHER

a bouquet blooms with breeze’s brushing

one blossom succinctly separates as

an iridescent shimmer

to hum and hover before memory’s freeze

zinnias

once small seeds separated beneath earth

now raised to face fond friends

as held hearts

gilded gold, pearled pink

queen lime’s chartreuses

each scarlet centered

drawing dwarfish eyes

each glorious great lake summer

just outside mother’s planted pale-bricked porch

a beauty to behold

as a tower

as a maiden

with long rapturous locks let loose

rarely seen

feathers turned against sun’s rays

nectar sucked center turned heavenward

to glimmer

a glance

a glimpse

the two together

both hummingbird and zinnia bloom

“The Pearl” by Kelly Jadon, (C) 2021

The Pearl

sands of world waters

wash against each shelf

each continent

breaking surf

against rocks

pounding shells

held in place by bounds, bonds, a beginning word

teaming

arms swarm

fins swim

life lives

begun by beginning word

formed from the foundation

the cross

the crux of the matter

crucified with Him

the Christ

the price
