South to Guatemala

The Guatemalan mountains shrouded in cloud cover are home to the Resplendent Quetzal. This bird makes its home in the canopy of the rainforests at very high altitudes.

During ancient times, the Mayan people prized the rare green tail feathers of the Quetzal, using them as a form of exchange. This idea persisted into modern Guatemalan culture with the currency of Guatemala called a “Quetzal.” The beautiful bird is also the national bird of Guatemala.

In this piece I created an artistic rendering of a Resplendent Quetzal using glass beads for the layered mosaics of the bird and the flowers. A large piece, it is covered in resin. It is for sale in my studio.

Do Dolphins Blush?

In the Gulf of Mexico, along the coast of Louisiana, a pink dolphin or two skim waves, bottlenosing into the depths again. One in particular is known as “Pinky.” Some scientists believe that she has a genetic mutation causing her pinkish hue. Other biologists think she may be an albino dolphin. She, however, is a delight to those who catch a glimpse of her.

Pinky lives in a pod of normal grayish colored bottlenose dolphins. Recently, she was seen with her own little pinky calf.

Artists love color. My dolphin projects are specifically chosen to highlight the need to protect these water mammals, especially those which garner public attention.

The Sarasota Dolphin Research Program explains that as the waters of the Gulf of Mexico increase in temperature, it is not uncommon to notice in summer months, that dolphins will have a pinkish color, known as “blushing” on their underbelly. Beings mammals, they too get hot and need a way to release excess heat. Humans can sweat. Because the creatures live under water, they cannot perspire. Their excess heat is given off by sending it to the outer perimeter of their bodies where it comes into contact with the cooler water. This creates the “blush” on the bellies of dolphins.

Rose-hued dolphins can be seen off the coasts of Louisiana, Florida and Texas.

The Quetzal

You see me,

my feathers, my tail, flitting far from my head

my influence flying over seas

far from me

You see me,

my rich royal colors alluring all to come and see

what I offer

but like a mirage

I am not what you see

but am as brown as the earth

my blood, the same as others

tinged

and like the others

have followed after falseness

an illusion

a mirage

of what is not really there

Is the Cross yet Green?

full of youth, full of its first fruited love

is there long-lingering life within its boughs

its branches?

is the cross yet green?

full of fat dripping as oil pressed under stone’s pressure?

is the cross yet green?

leafed profusely full as leaves for the healing of the nations?

the cross of Life

whittled from wood

shouldered by Jesus

embedded at Golgatha’s death gate

the cross of life

born from death

raised by God the Father

raised by Holy Spirit

the Son

life from the cross

the same yesterday, today, tomorrow

from Life, from the cross, from Christ comes

the solution to every issue

The House of Bread

born in Bethlehem

the “house of bread”

to become the “Bread of Life”

to all who eat of Him

His body, His flesh

the manna from Heaven

come from above

His body, His flesh

made at His Word

for all things were made through Him

His body, His flesh

that He might tabernacle

among us

for a time

His body, His flesh

the Temple

torn down

and rebuilt in three days

raised from the dead!

Beneath the Cross

beneath the cross

ignorant men

gambling for something they could not keep

just as He did not keep them at His death

“Father, forgive them” He prayed

instead

beneath the cross

the ignorant watched and waited

then one proclaimed

“truly He was the Son of God!”

His life His own

Spirit given up

instead

beneath the cross

the pagans who dealt in death

erected life to leave from cross’s cruelish crucifixion

received their pay

while He —Savior for all who called His Name

paid for their sins

instead

The Cost of Peace

the cost of peace came at the price

of a Man’s life

that man, the Son of Man

His blood, the Blood of God

gave His life

upon a wooden cross

peace can be returned to the nation

the country

the state

the city

the school

that returns to the Man, the Son of Man

Who paid the price

for with His death He has trampled death

how does death overcome death?

He rose from the grave after three days dead

He is the One Who lives

He is the One Who can make the peace

He is the One Who teaches

“love your neighbor as yourself”

He is the One Who paid the price, the cost

for peace
